About National Institute of Technology Trichy

The National Institute of Technology, Trichy is located in Tiruchirappalli near the banks of the River Cauvery in the heart of Tamil Nadu. The Institute was earlier known as the Regioanl College of Engineering. In 1964, the Institute was started as a cooperative and a joint venture of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of India. The Institute was established to fulfill the needs of manpower of the country in the field of technology. In order to help the college to grow and develop, the institution was conferred with autonomy in administrative and financial matters. Deemed University Status was granted to the University in 2003 by the UGC and after this, the College was renamed and it started to be called the National Institute of Technology.

The Institute has a program called the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program which has been funded by the World Bank, and with these funds, a lot of development is taking place in the Institute right now. The Institute offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses to students. The Undergraduate courses are offered to students in ten fields whereas the postgraduate courses are offered in 21 disciplines. Doctoral Programs are also offered by the Institute. Courses are offered in Engineering, and Technology and Science. Students from all over the country come to The National Institute of Technology, Trichy to study, and this is a great example of unity in diversity.

Excellent facilities are provided to the students which cater to all their needs. Facilities for academics as well as those for extracurricular activities are provided for convenience. There are many extracurricular activities that are provided by the Institute, like NSS, NCC, social clubs, students’ chapters of IEEE and sports and games. The Computer Support Group of the Institute maintains the Octagon. which is the best place of the campus as it is well equipped with all the modern facilities like high speed internet, Local Area Network, etc.

To ensure interaction of the students of The National Institute of Technology, Trichy with students of other colleges. and also develop their talents and skills, the Institute organizes two inter-college festivals called Pragyan and Festember, where the former is a technical festival and the latter is a cultural festival. The Inter-Department festival of the Institute is known as NITfest.

The campus of the Institute expands over an area of 800 acres where there are hostel facilities for the students. There are post and telegraph facilities, hospital, State Bank of India’s computerized branch, telecom centre, canteen, reprographic center and a swimming pool. The Institute takes all measures to ensure that all facilities are available to students, which will make them more comfortable. The Institute has grown leaps and bounds since the time it was incepted and now it has more than 3400 students enrolled in the courses. It is because of these efforts that the Institute is ranked one of the best engineering institutes of the country every year.
